Reef Hunters aka Muro-ami
This movie was filmed in Bohol, Philippines

Synopsis

Cesar Montano stars as Fredo the ruthless captain of the Aurora fishing boat; he has little or no scruples and has no hesitation to recruit child labour. With a high quota to meet he engages in illegal fishing system. The illegal fishing is done by pounding and crushing corals underwater to scare the fish and which lures them towards the nets. Fredo forces the Muro Ami divers, to accomplish at least eight to ten dives a day to meet their goal before the millennium. Tired and harassed after the burdening task being given to them, the children have to make do in subhuman conditions in the Muro Ami boat. They sleep in rat-infested bunks and are fed only twice a day. Life above the boat is much worse than the suffering the children encounter beneath the sea. For every dive, a child's life is perilously in danger.

Before we Begin

Below are the THEN and NOW shots of the filming locations used in Marilou Diaz-Abaya - Reef Hunters aka Muro-ami. The now shots were taken during our recent visit to the place (2007) while the then shots (1998) are the film grabs from the movie. This is a direct visual comparison of how the filming locations have changed over time. Some places and buildings are now totally unrecognizable due to massive development and area progress while some have undergone the opposite direction towards deterioration and decay. Some places, however, have stayed intact as they were, unaffected by the passage of weather and time.

The order below is the same order from the beginning to the end of the movie. If you can provide further information or help me locate the missing links, it will be greatly appreciated. These are all my personal observations and any form of constructive criticism or informative suggestion would be most welcome. If you know where the filming took place for this film, please use the contact form to get in touch. Click here to go to the contact form Thanks Roly – Filming Locations Detectives

Filming locations

Many Thanks

I have to say thank you to a good number of people who helped me sleuth out the locations. Inday (Jovina Ramo) Josan and Frank Ramo, Cathy and Rommel Montano and not forgetting Cesar Montano. I also wish to thank the people of Bohol, Philippines who put up with me asking questions, wish more filmes used Bohol as a filming location.

Meeting the Stars

While visiting Bohol, Philippines, we had the opportunity to meet up with Rommel and Cesar Montano. Cesar is the director and the star of Panaghoy Sa Suba (Call of the River), while Rommel played a background artisit. These brothers are big names in the Filipino film industry and are natives of Bohol.

These photos were taken at Rommel house, Rommel normally plays a bad guy so as a pose I asked him to strangle me and it nearly worked. Good one mate

The filming

The filming took place mainly around the Bohol sea skirting around Panglao Island and Balicasag Island, Bohol, Philippines, hence why this page isn't long. This area is commonly used for divers as it has a great reef base and the water is so clear. On our visit to Balicasag Island, the pump boat captain pointed out where the filming had taken place, he also told us the Shark which you see in the movie was mechanical remote control shark.

The top photos are of the area which was used in the filming. While on Balicasag Island, we asked the locals about the filming and a lot of them had not watched the film, so out came the portable dvd player and one of the guys said his sister Rebecca Lusterio played a role in the film. Rebecca lives and studies in Manila and has had parts in other Cesar Montano films such as Ligalig and Panaghoy Sa Suba.
