Based on Joseph Conrad's 'Heart Of Darkness' to kill a killer you need to recruit a killer,
that's what Captain Willard (Martin Sheen), has been assaigned to do. "Terminate
with extreme prejudice". He receives orders to seek out a renegade military
outpost led by a mysterious Colonel Kurtz (Marlon Brando) during the Vietnam war. A
classic war story with a great cast.

Below are the THEN and NOW
shots of the filming locations used in Francis Ford Coppola -
Apocalypse Now. The now shots are taken
accordingly during our recent visit
to the place (2007) while the then shots (1979)
are the still images from the movie. This
is a direct visual comparison of how
the filming locations have changed over
time. Some places and buildings are
now totally unrecognizable due to massive
development and area progress while
some have undergone the opposite direction
towards deterioration and decay. Some
places, however, have stayed intact
as they were, unaffected by the passage
of weather and time.
The order below is the same order
from the beginning to the end of the
movie. If you can provide further information
or help me locate the missing links,
it will be greatly appreciated. These
are all my personal observations and
any form of constructive criticism or
informative suggestion would be most

We know from visiting the actual location of the apartment, the view is not the same as above
Karlo Panahon from Paranaque , Philippines, sent us an e-mail "I have been trying
to figure out where this. The only clue we can find is the Greek Revival Architectural
form of the building on the other side of the street. This is the common style
used during the American Period for government buildings. I suspect it
could be a provincial capitol or a city hall." Thanks Karlo

The above scenes were shot in Caliraya which is a province of the Philippines,
about a 2 hour drive from Manila.
Captain Willards Apartment and the stairs going up to his apartment were
built by the production crew, for the purpose of the filming. As you
can see by the photographs and viewing the video above only a small
amount of the base and the foundations are still in existence.

The above scenes were shot in Caliraya which is a province of the Philippines, about a 2 hour drive from Manila.
Com Sec Intelligence landing pad and outbuildings, were purpose
built for the filming, it just had earth thrown over the concrete and
in the background you see an army truck on the road, that road is the main
road through. The buildings Captain Willard walks past with tin roofs are
still there today (without the roofs). The whole place had a sense of excitement to it.

Com Sec Intelligence security gate is no longer there,
Joy could not remember what happened to all the fencing and wire,
this whole area used to be her play area.

Com Sec Intelligence office, were just static homes made to look like an office,
the veranda was purpose built, as you can hear in the Commentary by Joy.

The filming locations of Captain Willard's Apartment, Com Sec Intelligence
and meeting Lieutenant Colonel Bill Kilgore,
were all shot on the same location in Laguna, Philippines.

The lady (Joy) in the above photograph is the daughter of the lady who owned the
land at the time of filming. The gentleman to my left is our driver Nelson,
who knew where some of the filming had taken place.
Joy remembers very clearly when she was a child,
the hussle and bussle of the film crew, the director and the helicopters,
Joy also remembers Charlie Sheen and Emilio Estevez,
being on set while the filming was taking place.
Joy told us all the buildings on her land were built
by the production company, and they have stood the test of time.
None of the interviews with Joy were Pre-rehearsed, she just loved to talk about the filming.

Some of the river scenes were also shot on Lake Caliraya (which you see in the background,) however we are not sure which ones.
