| Forrest Gump Synopsis
|
 |
I would not normally watch international blockbusters, but this film is different, it has life and substance.
It's a story of a man, who's rather slow-witted but good-hearted and we follow him through his years,
with heartbreak, trials and tribulations.

| Before we Begin |
We are at present gathering together the filming locations of
Robert Zemeckis -
Forrest Gump, staring Tom Hanks and Sally Fields.
The now shots were taken in 2007
The actual filming took place in 1994.
Eventually, this will show a direct visual comparison of how
the filming locations have changed over
time.
We understand that some places and buildings might be
totally unrecognisable due to massive
development and area progress while
some have gone the opposite direction
towards deterioration and decay. That is the beauty of this amazing hobby;
the use of visual imagination and a lot of research.
If you know where the filming took place for this film, please use the contact form to get in touch.

| Tidbits |
We had an e-mail from Reverent. Dr. John M. Finley, Senior Minister, First Baptist Church Savannah, Georgia, USA.
Reverent Finley I found your web site tonight quite by accident and was pleased to
find the location scenes from 'Forrest Gump'
You might be interested to know that the interior of the First Baptist Church
sanctuary was also used by Director Robert Redford in filming the movie,
Bagger Vance Regrettably, these two wedding scenes were removed from the
final cut of the movie. I also have it on good authority that the exterior of the First
Baptist Church sanctuary building was used as the White House in a 1974 film
entitled 'The Lincoln Conspiracy'; produced by the Arts and Entertainment Network.
I have never seen this film, but I understand that copies are available for purchase.
One other interesting note: the traffic flow around Chippewa Square, as you
guessed, was reversed for the filming of the movie. Normally, traffic around each
of the squares travels in a counter-clockwise direction. I suppose it had something
to do with passengers being able to enter and exit the buses used in the film.
Thanks for the great web site! Rev. Dr. John M. Finley

The Bus Stop
This is where Forrest Gump tells his story to all and Sunday
(Click on the (1994) film grab for a better & larger image)
In the film we see the bus stop in front of the bench and people get in and out, I noticed this is
one way traffic so I'm unsure if this is a new change or was created just for the film.
In the right photo below, this is what Forrest would be looking at in the street. About every 10 minutes a tour bus
would come by with the guide saying 'That's where Forrest Gump sat'

Thanks to Johnny Click who e-mailed us to say the "The bench (and suitcase) in Forest Gump
was preserved at the Savannah History Museum. I actually sat on the bench when the
"guards" were not looking. I checked for scrathes on the video and matched them to the
bench to prove to myself that it was indeed "THE" bench." Thanks Johnny for the information.

The statue in the background
In the background where Forrest sat on the bench, you can just make out a Statue. I have watched this film many times
and wondered what it was, well after visiting Chippewa Square, the statue in the background is
of General James Oglethorpe. Oglethorpe, born in 1696, founded the colony of Georgia in 1733.

The school used in this scene was Hampton Street, Elementary School, Walterboro ? north of Beaufort. This

lady who had a great character a bubbly personality and a New York accent. The water font is still evident to day, however the principles office

Thanks to Steve Patterson at Patterson Construction, Beaufort, SC. 'click here to visit their website'
Who gave us this tidbit of information.
'We (as in Patterson Construction) do indeed have the small shield used in Forrest Gump. It was originally
built at Riceland Plantation. It now sit behind the last house Allison road
owned by J Allen Patterson given to him as a joke to use as a shop by his
brothers Steve and Merritt. The main House from that location is in Cottage
Farm drive in Beaufort SC. That is only the second floor and I have many of the blueprints used to construct the sets' Thanks Steve

The tree
Jenny Curran (Hanna Hall) and Forrest Special Oak tree
(Click on the (1994) film grab for a better & larger image)
The actual location of the Forrest Gump tree is rather a mystery let me explain. While on our visit to
Beaufort, South Carolina we picked up a book called 'Lights Camera, Beaufort' by
Ginnie Kozak, in the book it gives directions to the wrong tree.
We recently had an e-mail from Barry Melton from Decatur, IN (who however
lived on Ladies Island). Barry tells us '
The Tree (Forrest and Jenny's tree) is located north of the air station in Gray's Hill, SC
Richard Poole, from Rincon Ga, contacted us with information to the location of the tree.
Richard tells us 'the Forest Gump tree is located in the back field of the old Roberds
Dairy in Savannah Ga. I grew up there and family of the owners told me so.'
Thanks Richard, for your information.
Mike Barnard from Ormond Beach, FL, contacted us with this information on the
location of the Forrest Gump Tree. 'Hi there, I'm a bit of a movie locations nut
and I've actually found the forrest gump tree. This was actually the hardest location
ever to find - and I've found a lot! Mainly because you won't find it listed in any
books or almost anywhere on the web. It took me close to 6 months to find it.
I came across one little snippet in a blog somewhere where somebody mentioned
it's whereabouts during a scenic bike route layout/map. It's off the same main
road where the driveway was filmed - but about 2 miles up. You can't really make
it out from the road, but it's across a field on someone's private property.
That long road has a ton of trees on each side - except for one area where
it opens up on each side and all you see is empty fields - right next to a big
crook in the road. I took many printouts of stills from the movie with me, and
trekked across the flooded swamp (in December - 2 years ago) and compared -
it's definitely the one. The grass isn't neat and pretty around it like in the movie -
it's all overgrown and the tree was quite full of leaves when I saw it. I have a few
pics that I took if you want me to submit, but they're a little dark. I pass that exit
off of 95 in Yemassee whenever I drive back up to Ohio, I live in Florida now.
Hope that helps. Mike' Thanks Mike, look forward to your photographs.

We were told Jenny's house was constructed on the Twickenham Road, Yemassee, SC.

Jean-Francois LEBLANC from Dieppe New-Brunswick, Canada contacted us
'Regarding Jenny's house. You advised that you couldn't find the location
of Jenny's old house. If you keep on driving on the Twickenham Road,
you'll eventually end up on the Twickenham Plantation Road.
You'll eventually see the tower on the right. Then you'll see some empty fields.
I have a hard time to see exactly where the house was, but its possible that
it was there.' Thanks Jean Francois.
