| This is England - Synopsis
|
 |
This is England: Mods, New Romantics, and Skinheads are the major youth sub-cultures
of this very English summer of 1983 and young 12-year-old Shaun (Thomas Turgoose)
is left wandering aimlessly alone and lost during the start of his school holidays, until
his chance meeting with Woody (Joseph Gilgun) and his fun and friendly Skinhead
pack. Finding a new lease of life; girls, parties, Ben Sherman shirts, Doc Martin boots
and shaven hairstyles young Shaun is welcomed, life during this summer holiday has
got a whole lot better. That is until Combo arrives on the scene bitter, dangerous, racist,
militant and psychotic life for young Shaun has just approached his first major crossroads.
This is England is a look back at the early eighties of British working-class life through
the eyes of young Shaun and his new gang, and dealing with the bitterness of outside
influences such as racism and xenophobia, of mass unemployment and the fall out of
the Falkland's War; Thatcher's Britain: Did we ever have it so good?

| Before we Begin |
Below are the THEN and NOW
shots of the filming locations used
in Shane Meadows,
This is England. The now shots are taken
accordingly during our recent visit
to the place (2007) while the then shots (2006)
are the still images from the movie. This
is a direct visual comparison of how
the filming locations have changed over
time. Some places and buildings are
now totally unrecognizable due to massive
development and area progress while
some have undergone the opposite direction
towards deterioration and decay. Some
places, however, have stayed intact
as they were, unaffected by the passage
of weather and time.
The order below is the same order
from the beginning to the end of the
movie. If you can provide further information
or help me locate the missing links,
it will be greatly appreciated. These
are all my personal observations and
any form of constructive criticism or
informative suggestion would be most
welcome. Roly – Filming Locations Detectives

The Shop is located on Ewe Lamb Lane, Stapleford, in Nottingham.
The lads in the photo grew up in the area and remembers when the shop was open.
The lads said that all fixtures and fittings were still in place.
Unfortunately we were unable to take photos of the interior, if you can help in this department please let us know!

Thanks to a Thribb on the Shane Meadows Forum, we found the shop quite easily. The takeaway
is still a takeaway, not sure if it had a new fascia on the shop though! The path
heading towards the underpath was quite easy to find. These are located at Church Square,
New Lenton, Nottingham.

Once again thanks to Thribb on the Shane Meadows Forum, we were able to locate the underpath
with no problems at all. Here is a photo of my wife on the wall were Shane ran on, which is a good 45 minute walk from the underpath.
